Sunday 23 April - Pyramids

Today we visited some recently discovered pyramids. These are unusual, because they're circular. There's a few circular ones in western Mexico. They were surrounded by huts, and there is an ancient ball court here.

They are high on a hill overlooking a lake. The pyramids were just for ceremonial use. The priest would do a dance on top of the pyramid, while the people danced in circles below.

The people lived day to day near the lake, and still do today. Walking up is rewarding, as the pyramids finally come into view.

The ball games here were played using only the hip to hit the ball. Games lasted all day. I think the winners were killed, sacrifice being an honour. It would almost be a welcome relief to be sacrificed at the end, in this heat.
